Course Outline

The rules for crossbow safety cover many of the same aspects of using a compound or traditional bow and arrow, however, there are some special challenges that set crossbows apart from hunting with other equipment.

  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for stringing and cocking a crossbow.
  • Only shoot arrows recommended by the manufacturer to avoid damage and injury.
  • Keep your thumbs, fingers, and hands out of the string travel path.
  • Avoid dry-firing a crossbow (pulling the trigger without a loaded arrow). It may cause serious damage to the crossbow and can injure both the shooter and those near the shooter.
  • Check the bowstring regularly, and replace it if it becomes worn or frayed. Frequent use of bowstring wax and the manufacturer’s recommended rail lubrication can greatly extend the life of a bowstring.
  • Store your crossbow uncocked and in a case. Hard-sided cases are recommended.
